There’s something sexy about dirt under your fingernails. Clay on your hands. Iron sparkling against your skin. Pulling something beautiful straight out of the earth and shaping it with your bare hands. Maybe I just like getting dirty.

A sneak peek into a new direction for Dirt Creature. I’ve been thinking a lot about pressure and release. Rupture and repair. The ways outside forces shape us, sometimes gently and sometimes not. This new body of work is exploring what happens after irreversible change. Not how we return to what we were before, but how we adapt, hold ourselves together, and become something different. There’s still beauty there. Sometimes more because the history remains visible. We don’t have to be untouched to be whole. More soon. 🏺

I’ve been sifting specular hematite that I collected in Michigan during my summer residency. Specular hematite is a crystalline form of iron oxide, made up of tiny reflective plates that give it this almost glitter-like metallic shimmer. I’m experimenting with mixing it directly into the clay to see how much of that mineral sparkle survives the firing. More and more, I want the materials in my work to actually come from the places I’ve moved through. There’s something important to me about digging something out of the earth with my own hands, carrying it home, and letting that particular piece of land become part of the object. Back in the studio after a few months of wandering, looking, learning, and trying to figure out what comes next. The first pieces from a new series, Held / Holding, are starting to come to life. I’ve been thinking a lot about rupture and repair. About what happens after something breaks and can’t simply be returned to what it was before. Maybe repair isn’t about hiding the damage. Maybe the scar becomes part of the object’s story. Maybe the new form can be stranger, more complicated, and still beautiful. These pieces are an exploration of that space: breaking, holding, mending, becoming something different. The online shop is live again, and there’s a lot more work coming soon. Every collection I've made has been pointing toward something bigger. This summer, I'm giving that idea my full attention. Dirt Creature is entering a season of deep work. Less scrolling. Less selling. More making. More experimenting. More time in the places these pieces come from. I've always described my work as artifacts from a civilization trying to remember how to relate to earth again. This summer is about discovering what that really means.
