I’ve started making my own clay bodies. Partly because I’m picky. I want the color I want. The throwing feel I want. The workability I want. And apparently asking one commercial clay body to do all of those things at once was unreasonable. But the bigger reason is that making my own lets me bring materials I’ve gathered from the land directly into the clay itself. That matters to me. The dirt isn’t just inspiration anymore. It gets to become part of the object. Very romantic. Very connected to place. Very Dirt Creature. The less romantic part is that today I have more than 200 lbs. of clay to wedge by hand. So apparently my artistic practice is now also a CrossFit program. If anyone has a vacuum pug mill they’ve been desperately trying to give away, this is your moment. My shoulders and I are listening.

A big thank you to everyone who came out to Art in the Park this weekend, stopped to talk, picked things up, asked questions, and took a little piece of Dirt Creature home with you. It still feels strange and wonderful watching these things leave the studio and head off into other people's lives. 🖤 We have one more Southern Arizona show next weekend before I disappear back into the studio for a bit. This is the first chance to see and take home work from the new Holding series, and the last chance to pick up much of my functional ware before Dirt Creature shifts a little further into the strange. Its been a crazy week, up at 5am every day to unload and reload the solar powered kiln before sun rise. But it's been totally worth it to get these new "Holding" vases done and ready for this weekends art fair! Art in the Park Sierra Vista Booth 26 9-5 Saturday 9-4 Sunday

A peek into the back rooms of Dirt Creature. At some point the pottery studio quietly ate the wood shop and metal shop. Now every available surface has been claimed by clay. Clay drying to be processed. Custom clay blends getting ready for the studio. Finished work waiting for the kiln. A kiln already firing. A corner converted into a photo studio. Apparently this is what “getting ready for the holiday season” looks like when you run an off-grid pottery studio in the desert. Not especially glamorous. Very dusty. Slightly feral. But there’s a whole lot of new work moving through this little building right now.
